Uber Driver Dead, Two Navy Sailors seriously injured after Escambia County Wreck
A tragic incident on Gulf Beach Highway and Navy Boulevard on Saturday morning has resulted in the death of a 60-year-old Pensacola man and left two US Navy Sailors seriously injured. The man, who was driving a Subaru sedan for Uber had two passengers: a 28-year-old sailor from New York and a 22-year-old sailor from Iowa.
The fatal crash occurred around 4 a.m. as the Uber driver proceeded southbound through the intersection with a green light. Simultaneously, a 19-year-old woman from Pensacola, driving a Hyundai sedan, ran a red light while headed eastbound, according to multiple witnesses. The front of her vehicle struck the right side of the Subaru, resulting in a devastating collision.
The Uber driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Navy sailors were transported to a nearby trauma center. The Hyundai driver also sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a nearby medical facility.
The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Investigators are managing the investigation. Notifications to the next-of-kin for the US Navy sailors are pending.
